Since 2001, I've been working with assessment organisations, conducting oral exams in the form of face-to-face interviews and marking written assessments. My assessment work has taken me to more than 25 countries and I have conducted over 10,000 oral exams and seen the full range of candidate performances along the way.
One of the most exciting parts of this work is the range of interviewing skills examiners develop when conducting unscripted interviews, using techniques to create conversation and encourage the candidate to keep speaking and interacting with minimal effort from the examiner. I've conducted research into the 'art' of successful elicitation (see the Research page) and run workshops training teachers and examiners in techniques for getting students to start talking and keep talking.
